Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi smart farming initiatives empower underrepresented communities

Undergraduate students will experience innovative agricultural technologies to better prepare for our future

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Smart farming is paving the way for the future of agriculture.

The Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will open the door for underrepresented groups in South Texas to have a hands-on learning experience.

Communications specialist Brenda Davis explains how some of the new advancements in farming have led to newer tools.

"Traditional agriculture consist of a lot of hands on working in the field very arduous, very taxing on the body. Contrary to that though, when integrating some of these advanced technologies that we have, unmanned ariel system such as drones, light r, scanning and sensor capabilities, we have available to us through some of these advanced technologies".

Through professional development, training, and working alongside those already in the field of agriculture, the goal of closing the educational gaps and serving the economic needs of South Texas is possible.

Ana Guerrero is a Corpus Christi native now pursuing a doctoral degree in Coastal and Marine Systems Sciences.

"As part of the experience, there were different professors, different professionals in the field. It wasn't just professors; people who live and breathe agriculture, people who live and breathe animal science, they want to do so much for the farming community to ensure that we have our resources to continue to grow food."

The program is funded by a $750,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Those enrolled at South Texas colleges and universities are encouraged to apply.
