CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Texas Historical Marker Dedication Ceremony commemorating the lasting contributions of the U.S.S. Lexington took place Saturday.
Officials said the date of the ceremony, which fell on the 81st anniversary of the ship's commissioning, was a fitting one.
Steve Banta, executive director of the U.S.S. Lexington, said the event was an honor and reflects the military support in South Texas.
"This area has great military support, great veteran support," Banta said. "The ship itself represents the military, represents veterans. That partnership between the community and the ship is something we're very proud of. The fact that the county and the state wanted to honor the ship by putting in this historical marker. I mean it's something that'll always be here now."
The marker is located at the base of the pier in the plaza ready to be read as guests walk up to see the 'Lady Lex' museum itself.
