CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The USS Kingsville combat ship was commissioned Saturday at a ceremony at the Solomon Ortiz Center.
The event is historic because it's the first time a naval warship has been named after a South Texas city.
Speakers at the ceremony included Mayor Paulette Guajardo, Mayor of Kingsville Sam Fugate and congressman Michael Cloud.
3NEWS was able to catch up with a Navy Mineman 2nd class petty officer Yasir Muhammad who loves to be on this new ship.
"It's fun I like it. I love to be on this ship. I love all the things we do, we're having fun, certifications are fun, being here was fun. Going back to, hopefully we can get back to San Diego safely, have some fun over there," said Muhammad.
Crews aboard the ship have been training and completing mission after mission.
The USS Kingsville will remain here in Corpus Christi until it sets sail for it's homeport in San Diego.
