CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — According to the Department of Public Safety, a head-on crash Monday on State Highway 359 killed two people and sent several others to the hospital, including a 15-month-old child.
For an hour, both sides of Highway 359 were closed off as DPS investigated the crash scene. Authorities said caliche fell off a dump truck and caused the accident.
According to DPS, it was around 3 p.m. when the dump truck was heading westbound on Highway 359 and the caliche it was hauling spilled all over the road. Shortly after, DPS troopers said a Jeep and a truck traveling in opposite directions lost control and collided head-on.
The driver of the jeep, 59-year-old Kenneth Durham, and a rear passenger, 61-year-old Rhonda Durham, were both killed at the scene.
Three other passengers in the Jeep, including a 15-month-old, were taken to the hospital along with the driver of the truck. All four have non-life-threatening injuries
According to DPS troopers, the caliche caused the cars to lose control. The driver of the dump truck will be cited for failure to secure the load.
