Here's why Nueces County voters will be asked to participate in two separate elections in May

Several items will be decided in a month bookended by a pair of calls to the ballot box.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Voters in Nueces County will be asked to return to the polls next month to decide a few issues that remain outstanding. But did you know that there are actually two elections in May?

The first call to the ballot box happens on Saturday, May 4, for the Nueces County Joint Election.

If that date sticks out in your mind, it is likely because that is also the day of the annual Rally Night Parade at Buc Days, which this year brings back the Leopard Street route and marks the return of the Buccaneer Stadium Show.

On that day, voters will be asked to decide among the 11 people who are running for 3 spots on the board of the Nueces County Appraisal District. Typically, county appraisal boards have been appointed positions, but a new law passed in Texas last November as a part of Proposition 2 now provides for three elected positions.

There are also three bond issues to be decided on that day in the Banquete, Bishop and Calallen school districts.

Then on Tuesday, May 28, the Democratic and Republican Joint Primary Runoff Election will take place. This time, the focus is on the contests not decided during the March primary election.

That includes the race to be the Republican nominee for District Attorney between Jimmy Granberry and James Sales. The winner will face the Democratic nominee, attorney Terry Shamsie, in the November election.

Early voting for the May 4 Nueces County Joint Election will take place April 22-30.

Early voting for the May 28 Primary Runoff Election will happen from May 20-24.

If you meet the eligibility requirements, you still have time to apply for a ballot by mail for either election.
