Two-year road closure in Sinton has residents at odds with county commissioner

County judge David Krebs tells 3NEWS he is aware of the situation, and the commissioner explains why the reconstruction has taken so long.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —

Dean Hesseltine lives along 2367, and said the half-mile road closure of County Road 2367 in Sinton gives him a headache.

The nearly two-year closure has residents who live in the area concerned.

"To get to my two houses, I got to down the road, all the way across and then come all the way back," he said.

In San Patricio County, each county commissioner is responsible for the road projects in their precinct.

Commissioner Lilly Wilkinson oversees the work on County Road 2367.

It's also the road on which she lives.

"I've told her numerous times 'It doesn't look good closing a road down next to your property that you own,' " said county judge David Krebs.

Wilkinson tells 3NEWS that some roads require a lot of work, especially one like County Road 2367, which she says didn't just need to be completely redone, but also needed ditch work and larger culverts.

She said doing this project as a complete package -- all at once -- will save taxpayers money.

"If we didn't do the ditches and we just did the roads, then when we flooded, it would tear the roads back up," she said. "It would soften them because the water would leak them and soften them up. Then we we drive down it would break them back up again."

Krebs said Wilkinson has the largest precinct in the county, overseeing more than 400 miles of road, and that other commissioners have offered help.

"One of the commissioners has volunteered to come in there and fix the road for her if she doesn't have time," he said. "So the other commissioners have tried to get her. . . . 'Let us help you. Let us help you."

Wilkinson says she doesn't recall those offers for help, but did say that her and her crew are doing very detailed work, and she gives frequent project updates on Facebook

She said she hopes the work will be done by the end of the year.
