Ray HS hosts UIL Unified Sports Basketball Tournament for regional playoff game

The game encourages student athletes and athletes with intellectual disabilities to be able to compete on a team together at a higher level.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — On Wednesday Ray High School hosted the UIL Unified Sports Basketball Tournament for its third year.

The tournament allows student athletes and athletes with intellectual disabilities to be able to compete on a team together at a higher level.

Area program director with Special Olympics Texas- Corpus Christi, Angela Brengman, said the game it's a great movement to give those athletes an opportunity to be recognized through UIL, as well as at their own school, as an athlete among their peers.

"It is really just another branch of UIL high school basketball or high school track that our athletes get to participate in and really get to immerse themselves in that high school experience," Brengman said. "Being able to see the heightened level of play that our athletes have achieved being in the UIL system is just so great I think it blows everybody's minds when they really see it."

She encouraged any athletic directors looking to get their schools involved in the program to contact the organization and open doors for more athletes.
