CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — You may have noticed recently that the spans across the ship channel are getting closer to connecting for the new Harbor Bridge.
The south interchange of I-37 will close at 9 p.m. Tuesday and will reopen by about 5 a.m. Wednesday. This will be happening intermittently over the next six weeks.
Much of the work being done now is to ensure the strength of the individual stay cables that will support the bridge. Those are the white pipes that are visible on the bridge, and each once is capable of supporting more than 1,000 tons!
According to Flatiron/Dragados Harbor Bridge Project Public Information Manager Lynn Allison, crews have been working both during the day and the night in order to remain on schedule for a March 2025 opening.
"We're running crews at night, day and night, just to make up for the timeline," Allison said. "We will be installing the last set of stay cables this winter in December and planning to place the last segment by January, so we're really running cycles of two to three weeks."
