Upgrades are coming to the Aransas Pass boardwalk

Aransas Pass will be communicating with the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries program with plans of having the project complete by the end of October.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —

The City of Aransas Pass is planning the 'Boardwalk Enhancement Project', which will repair weathered pylons, structural framing and repair its damaged pavilion.

City Manager, Gary Edwards said the project is something that will improve the safety and durability of the boardwalk.

"This boardwalk has been here for years - at least 30 or 40 years,” Edwards said. “Consequently because of its age, the boardwalk is in need of significant repair.”

Thanks to funding from the Coastal Bend Bays Estuaries program, the City of Aransas Pass will soon see significant improvements to the nature boardwalk located at their aquatic center.

City Manager, Gary Edwards said the over $358,000 repair job is significant because it will provide the foundation for a captivating bird sanctuary.

"This is something that is popular in this part of the state, bird sanctuaries, and it's something that we'll be taking advantage of as far as offering the service to the people of Aransas Pass and the visitors of Aransas Pass,” Edwards said.

Edwards says the boardwalk's biggest upgrade includes completely replacing the current decking with non-slip, rot resistant panels.

"The wood that's there will rot after a relatively short period of time, so the boardwalk itself will have a permanent texture to it that will allow it to be permanent as opposed to wood," Edwards said.

The plans for the future of the boardwalk don't stop there.

"After we finish the repairs, we'll be perusing other grants to expand, extend what is already a very large boardwalk to make it even larger," Edwards said. "We plan to, anyway, take it across the water and connect with the other end, which would take people further out into the water and make the bird visibility and bird availability even more attractive.”

In the coming months, Aransas Pass will be communicating with the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries program with plans of having the project complete by the end of October.
