CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Drivers are being asked by law enforcement to slow down when driving through neighborhoods this Halloween.
That includes popular trick-or-treating spots like Masterson Drive, also known as "Scary Lane." There will be extra Corpus Christi Police Department patrols in neighborhoods that attract big crowds with decorations.
Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to go with a group, parents or another adult.
CCPD also recommends starting earlier in the day since it gets darker sooner.
They had these tips for drivers to help keep kids safe as they are on the hunt for candy.
"It's going to be very crowded," CCPD Senior Officer Antonio Contreras said. "There are going to be little kids running all about, and we just want you to slow down, look both ways and just be aware."
Contreras said that kids should bring a flashlight, wear bright clothes and stay with their group. Drivers and trick-or-treaters should avoid being distracted by their phones.
He said that how and where you cross the street makes a difference.
"Don't be running across the street," Contreras said. "Make sure you cross at least at an intersection and especially at a crosswalk."
Alexis Mendoza lives off "Scary Lane" and said that the community goes all-out decorating for Halloween. She said that many people drive through her neighborhood to look at the displays — especially in the last couple of weeks. She explained that the goal is for everyone to stay safe when they come through.
"You're being mindful of the kids walking across the street and it does get packed, so, just everyone have a good time, but just remaining mindful about who's around and the cars coming," Mendoza said.
She said her dad takes a lot of pride in decorating their house adding more spooky additions with each year.
"He does it for the community, he does it for the kids, and that's basically the goal of all of it," Mendoza said. "Just to see everyone have a good time and come together and celebrate Halloween."
