Water Garden damaged by Harvey, City looking to make repairs

Normally the fountains shoot spectacular streams of water, but since Harvey struck in late August, they've been off.

It's one of the more eye-catching landmarks in Corpus Christi, but for the last several months the Water Garden downtown has been out of commission.

The reason: Damage from Hurricane Harvey.

Normally the fountains shoot spectacular streams of water, but since Harvey struck in late August, they've been off.

City officials said when Harvey made landfall, it slammed the Water Garden's mechanical room with a large amount of water. The mechanical room is right at sea level. That's caused problems in the past, but nothing like the damage from Hurricane Harvey.

The Water Garden has been shut off ever since, but there is hope that the site will be back up and running soon. The City recently signed a contract with a local consulting firm to assess the damage caused by Harvey.

"What they are doing is assessing the damage. They are assessing, providing recommendations also, as to the repairs, and possibly design if we need to look at that," said Gina Sanchez, interim assistant director of the City's Parks & Recreation Department.

That consulting firm has already made site visits to the Water Garden and the assessment phase is well underway.
