CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — West Oso ISD continued their celebration of Black History Month today.
This year the theme was 'African Americans in the Arts'.
Superintendent Kim Moore says what makes West Oso ISD so unique is that the school district brings together all of their students, from elementary to high school, along with community members to celebrate and learn about Black history.
"We want all of our students, especially this month when we are focusing on our African American students, but certainly all of our students to know that their dreams are all possibilities," Moore said. "That they are welcome, that they are included. We want them to find their passions and their talents, and to be bold about pursuing them."
Attendees this year were treated to a performance by the high school jazz band and poems by famous Black poets as well as original pieces written by students. One of the original pieces was written by a student to help overcome a past trauma while uplifting others.
"You're not alone," Junior at West Oso, Zakyra Stafford said. "At the end of the day, you're not alone and there's somebody who understands you. Whether you're white, Black, Hispanic, green, yellow, blue. Someone gets you and someone is here for you."
The district's Black History Month has been taking place all February and has included campus luncheons, library book displays and daily announcements spotlighting Black history.
