Viewer Question: Why are several pedestrian crosswalk signals covered up along SPID?

A 3News viewer called to ask why so many crosswalk signals were covered up along busy intersections. TxDOT told us it's part of a plan to make the signals ADA safe.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A question from a viewer had us spending part of the day asking our own questions:

Why are several pedestrian crossing signals along SPID covered up?

3News went to check out the intersections to find out what was going on. After a look into the issue, it was revealed that the signals were covered as a part of an ADA safety project.

Pedestrian Robert Romanfelan said he was worried the intersections were not safe.

"I think it's horrible how they have it. They need to fix it right away because if not someone's going to end up getting hit. I've almost been hit a couple times walking across the highway."

Aaray Davis is another pedestrian who said he was having a difficult time getting through the crosswalks.

"It is pretty hard.  I'm not going to lie to you. Every time I come back and forth; I still have a very high risk of getting hit by a car. Because someone may not be paying attention, and they'll see the light green. But the crosswalk is still active."

These two pedestrians are talking about intersections along SPID where the crosswalk signal lights are covered up and not working.

TxDOT said they have started an ADA safety project to replace most of the pedestrian signals along State Highway 358.

That includes 14 intersections from Flour Bluff through Corpus Christi.

Here are intersections receiving ADA improvements. Staples is nearing completion:

  • Staples Street.
  •  Flour Bluff Drive
  •  Waldron Road
  •  Roddfield Road
  •  Nile Drive
  •  Airline Road
  •  Carroll ln.
  •  Kostoryz Road
  •  Ayers Street
  •  Greenwood Drive
  •  West Point Road
  •  Old Brownsville Road
  •  Bear Lane
  •  Agnes Street

Another man said the drivers do not seem to be paying much attention either.

Pedro Garcia said it's challenging to move through the area.

"It's hard to cross through here when you got traffic going both angles. And people really don't even want to stop and wait for their turn."

Several people we interviewed said they were worried about crossing busy intersections without the help of a crosswalk signal. But we did find one gentleman who said it's actually a little easier for him when they're not working.

A pedestrian who identified himself by the name Jerry, said "It's easier to cross with them out than it is to cross with them working. Because you got to wait. Here you just see an opening and you go."

TxDOT said they are working with the contractor to get an exact schedule of when each intersection will be working and hope to have them all operational by spring. In the meantime, while the work is going on, motorists need to be careful especially at some of our busier intersections.
