A cause of death has not been released, but Canales suffered from a number of health issues following a stroke in 2008.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A woman has filed a motion with the Nueces County District Clerk's Office stating she is the surviving spouse and rightful heir of the late, legendary TV host Juan José "Johnny" Canales.

The host of the iconic "The Johnny Canales Show" died June 12

Sylvia Ann Castillo states she married Canales in Duval County on Aug. 13, 1980, and that they never divorced, nor was the marriage ever annulled.

The filing states that because her marriage to Canales was never dissolved, his marriage to his longtime co-host Nora Canales was never legally binding.

The motion for a temporary injunction and an accounting of Canales' properties filed on Oct. 31 in Nueces County aims to stop Nora Canales from being "in possession of property and funds belonging to the Estate of Decedent. . . . property that rightfully and legally belongs to Castillo."

The decendent is "Johnny" Canales.

It requests Nora Canales give the court a record of everything she "now holds or has had possession of since January 1, 2024 that previously belonged to Decedent, or by which she claims ownership of by virtue of an alleged community interest."

Castillo also asks the court to stop Nora Canales from:

  • attempting to reduce the value of "Johnny" Canales' estate
  • falsifying records related to the estate's property
  • misrepresenting or tampering with the estate's tangible and/or intellectual property
  • selling or transferring any property owned by the estate
  • withdrawing money from checking, savings accounts or other financial plans without the court's permission
  • entering a safe-deposit box belonging to the estate
  • getting rid of any of "Johnny" Canales' financial records, and;
  • altering or destroying any electronic correspondence or metadata relating to the case.

A hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Judge Deeanne Galvan's court.
