Nueces County Commissioner Precinct 1 candidates

Incumbent Robert Hernandez and At-Large City Councilmember Mike Pusley are running for the Pct. 1 commissioners court seat.

NUECES COUNTY, Texas — Two well-known candidates are running to represent Precinct 1 in Nueces County

Incumbent Robert Hernandez was first elected in 2020. He's running for re-election to complete several projects in the works for Pct. 1.

"I got some projects that are getting started that I would like to see them through," he said. "I feel like the county, we're going the right direction right now and I want to keep it going that away and I want to be part of it."

Corpus Christi City Councilmember At-Large Mike Pusley is running again for the county position he served from 2009 to 2018. If elected, he said he's looking forward to making a bigger impact this second time around.

"I think people can go back and look at my track record and see that I was always very with conscientious about working with constituents and organizations to help make improvements to parks, to neighborhoods, to streets, to drainage," Pusley said.

Hernandez said he does not support the idea of the Inner Harbor Desalination Project.

"Whether I am commissioner or not I would be opposed to it," Hernandez said. "It's not the right thing to do for the citizens."

Pusley, on the other hand, is in favor of the project.

"I think it's a great project, it's going to provide 30 million gallons of water a day," he said. "We've done the science and research on it."

Both candidates expressed the importance of maintaining budget spending in order to complete big projects in Precinct 1.

"I've always said we need to spend our money wisely and make it count whatever we do," Hernandez said.

"How it's funded, funding sources the city utilized and I think I can bring some of that back to the county and utilize it there to help us move some projects forward that will be important to the county," Pusley said.
