District 4 candidates Kaylynn Paxson and May Mendoza will head to a runoff election for the city council seat.
Paxson, currently the director of community enrichment for Aransas Pass, received the most votes Tuesday night, however, she did not get over 51%, needed to avoid a runoff.
She will face the second-closest candidate, Mendoza, who owns Merida's Tapas & Cantina.
Dan Grimsbo, May Mendoza, Kaylynn Paxson and Eric Magnusson IV all were vying for the office, which represents Flour Bluff and Padre Island.
Paxson said the biggest issue facing the city right now is a lack of involving residents in big decisions.
"It is important to me that we focus on the things that impact the daily life of our citizens and actively involve them in the conversations about this city," she said
Mendoza told 3NEWS that, if elected, she was sure she would be able to overcome any obstacles despite never having held public office.
"I know I can do my homework and make sure that I can overcome any objections with my fellow councilmembers and be able to work together so that we can actually get some things done," she said.
Digital director Ana Tamez and digital content producer Mia Valdez contributed to this developing story. 3NEWS will provide updates as they come available.
