Mark Gonzalez had to wait until early Wednesday morning to hear the results that determined he will be the next Nueces County District Attorney.
Gonzalez beat out opponent James Gardener with 50.59-percent of the vote -- nearly 1,200 more votes than Gardener.
"We didn't know until early early morning. My brother came home and said you won. We turned off the phone. I went to sleep. 'We'll deal with it in the morning. The numbers are going to be the numbers,'" Gonzalez said. "It wasn't until this morning where it's kind of soaking in, you know? And just taking it in and realizing, wow, we did this. And now the real work starts."
This will be Gonzalez's first term as district attorney.
