Prayer & Candlelight Vigil Held for Humpal Family

A prayer vigil was held Wednesday night for the South Texas family involved in a Colorado plane crash over the weekend.

A prayer vigil was held Wednesday night for the South Texas family involved in a Colorado plane crash over the weekend.

It was held at Scott Humpal's Physical Therapy facility on Deepwood Circle. Humpal and his family were involved in a deadly plane crash over the weekend. It went down in a Colorado snow storm. The crash killed Scott's wife Gaby Humpal, 44, and the pilot Hans Vandervlught, 75, of Refugio.

Scott and Gaby's 11-year old daughter Sara was critically injured. Well over 100 people came out to the prayer vigil.

The staff wanted to do something for Scott so they organized a candlelight vigil that ended up being much bigger than they expected.

"Scott, he's a wonderful man, knows how to take care of employees and family. I know he's going to have a hard time going through this we want him to know were here for him," says Kaley Swallow who works with Scott Humpal.

Folks gathered around Scott Humpal's office off of South Padre Island Drive. Many holding candles, everyone with their own special connection to the Humpal family.

The co-director of the physical therapy office led the group in prayer, read scripture then asked for a moment of silence. He also updated everyone on how Scott and his children are doing.

He said 11-year old Sarah, who's injuries were the most severe is improving. Her father has been at her side since his first visit Tuesday. She's opening her eyes and able to give a thumbs up and is responding well.

Scott and the other two children are in stable condition. Of course they're all very eager to come back to Corpus Christi, ready be home and most importantly be with family during this tough time.

When they do return, one thing is for sure, there's a lot of people here thinking and praying for them.

"The phone hasn't stopped ringing since Monday. 'What can we do?' "Where can we send flowers?' It's heart-warming and we're touched by not surprised, but touched by the number of people the Humpal family has spoken to over the years," says Russell Hanks, Co-Director of Humpal Physical Therapy.

Funeral arrangements are still pending. Those plans should be firmed up by this weekend. As soon as Scott and the rest of the family are able to leave Colorado and come back home.
