CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — On Monday night, hundreds gathered for a candle light vigil at Sinton Elementary School to remember 16-year-old Gavin McFarland.
McFarland died Sunday morning when he and his father were gunned down during a road rage incident on County Road 732 in St. Paul just north of Sinton.
Gavin's father, Gabe, was shot too but survived and was able to make it in a wheelchair to the vigil to be with Gavin's mom.
One after the other people hugged and expressed their condolences to those who knew and loved Gavin the most.
His teammates, school staff, family, neighbors and people who didn't even know him walked side by side from Sinton Elementary to Sinton High School were Gavin was a student.
"He always had everyone's back and always wanted to help anyone who needed anything," Blake Smith, a friend of Gavin's said. "It didn't matter when or where he was always there for everybody."
"Definitely wasn't easy," Krista Boscamp said. "He was definitely somebody you would never think this would happen to. He was one of the nicest people so I was completely taken by surprise."
Boscamp is the Mcfarland's neighbor. She said her parents have known the McFarlands since before they were born.
Still in shock, some of his friends said they never thought when they got off the phone with Gavin that it would be the last time they would hear his voice.
Friends said seeing the community come together for Gavin made them feel better, but nothing will ever completely take away the pain of losing him so soon.
But they said they will never forget him and they hope whoever took his life will be brought to justice
Investigators are still looking for the people responsible for the shooting. Anyone who may know or have seen anything is asked to call police.
