Javelina Football alumni gather at homecoming game, help recruit team's future at tailgate

The Javelina Football Letterman's Association aims to give back to the football program.

KINGSVILLE, Texas — It was homecoming on Saturday and Javelina Stadium was filled with Texas A&M University-Kingsville alumni.

The tailgate also included a club that aims to give back to the football program. It is called the Javelina Football Letterman's Association and includes former players.

TAMU-K graduate Marcy Martinez is now the associate superintendent for communications at Harlingen CISD and her brother-in-law helped start the club. She said it lets recruits meet former Javelina players that have made it to the pro level.

"We have former NFL players that are involved. We have engineers, name it, these guys want to give back," Martinez said. "So, pulling their money together, they come out and they feed the recruits that are coming in and kind of show them a great time and what it's all about."

With about 40 members in the club, Martinez said tailgates are a great time to support the Javelinas. She said the club showcases the Javelina family and creates a sense of pride.

It also translates from athletics to the classroom, she said. When recruits meet former players, she mentioned that can help them learn about what they could one day do in the future.
