Blitz Preview: Flour Bluff Hornets

The Hornets enter the 2024 season with a new district, a new division and a new head coach.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Flour Bluff Hornets fly on up to 5A Division I heading into the 2024 season and they'll do it with a new head coach as well.

Clynt Elwood becomes just the third head coach for Flour Bluff since 2005 after taking over for Chris Steinbruck, who was named the district's superintendent. Elwood might appreciate a good defense as the Hornets' former defensive coordinator, but it's his offense that is shaping up to be one of the best in the viewing area behind senior quarterback Jayden Paluseo and Vanderbilt commit Cameran Dickson at receiver, among others.

The hornets and their new head coach know the expectation is to once again be making a deep run come playoff time.

"The tradition and the expectations have already been set from Coach Steinbruck and Coach Andrus before him," Elwood said at the first day of practice Monday. "It's just my job continuing to protect that tradition and make sure that we're doing right by our kids."

Flour Bluff has an unusual schedule to kick off the year with home games against Mexico City and San Antonio Marshall before beginning district play in week three with the first of seven straight games against Valley teams. The return of the "Yorktown Showdown" against rival Veterans Memorial comes in week 11.
