Blitz Preview: Mathis Pirates

The Pirates are hoping a change at the top will lead to a turnaround heading into the 2024 season.

MATHIS, Texas — The Mathis Pirates pulled a coaching change late in the hiring cycle, brining in Calallen assistant Rodney Acosta to take over the program.

Acosta had previously been the Head Coach and Athletic Director at La Pryor in the Valley where he made the playoffs in each of his two seasons there. Mathis is hoping he'll do the same after the Pirates have been shut out for the last four seasons.

Acosta says he doesn't just want his team to compete in a tough district, he wants them to win.

"We're looking for execution," Acosta said before last week's scrimmage against Odem. "I don't want these kids thinking, I just want them playing hard and just having fun. Hopefully we can bring success here."

Mathis opens the season next Friday night at home against the Taft Greyhounds.
