SINTON, Texas — The Sinton Pirates are coming off a deep run in the playoffs last year to the UIL State Quarterfinals.
With Rockport-Fulton and Cuero joining their district, the team's focus is on getting better and respecting their opponent every week. Sinton Head Coach Michael Troutman said the expectations for his team this year are the same as last year.
Now, he said it is up to this team to build their own legacy after last year's seniors graduated. He said that includes standout offensive players that are back and new defensive players that need to earn their spots.
As for what it will take to beat teams like Wimberley--who they faced in the fourth round of the playoffs last year--he said Sinton can not be satisfied and needs to keep building off last year.
"They have to be willing to work every day and take advantage of every opportunity that they have to get better, and to live up to those expectations and what it means to play Sinton Pirate Football," Troutman said.
Senior wide receiver and defensive back Jacoby James said practice is their chance to get better as a team.
"Execution is definitely the most important thing, and I believe that it starts all in practice," James said. "How you practice is how you play, and then bring it to Friday night and we'll just do what we do, be successful."
Senior running back Derek Garcia added that they need to focus on building strength to be successful on the field.
"Honestly, just being in the weight room getting stronger every day. Just taking advantage of every day and taking practice seriously," Garcia said.
Troutman said it is always exciting once players are back for preseason practice. He said that is what separates the men from the boys--seeing which kids will step up.
Sinton will face Beeville in a few weeks to begin the new football season.
