CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Miller Buccaneers are coming off a year were they won 13 straight games and yet, it was the one they lost that has eaten at them all offseason.
Miller lead Brownsville Vets 28-7 in the fourth quarter before giving up 28 unanswered to lose the state quarterfinal in heartbreaking fashion. The Bucs have used that letdown to fuel them for eight months and will continue to do so throughout the season as they drop down a division to 5A D-II.
"We had a motto this year of 9:44," senior quarterback Trevor Long said. "That's when we were up 28-7 and really lost the game. We lost focus and this year it's not going to happen."
"Whenever you experience a loss like that, the biggest thing you're trying to do is get back on the field," Miller Head Coach Justen Evans said. "It's been a long time since December 1st, but we're excited to be back out here."
The Bucs have a monster non-district schedule with four ranked teams in five games including the big one against two-time defending 6A D-II state champ DeSoto in the Alamodome in week three.
