The Calallen Wildcats' baseball team got its send off to state Tuesday just days after the softball team added some more hardware of their own.
The baseball team is headed back to the state semifinal for the first time since 2011. The 'Cats will be looking to win the fourth title in program history, but the first since 2008.
Conversely, the Ladycats' softball team just made it back-to-back state titles win a win over Liberty Saturday in the 4A State Championship. Siblings Rilyn and Drayson Gamez could both be state champions as the softball senior says she'll be rooting on her little brother to do what her team just accomplished.
"I'm more nervous for them because we won last year," the senior Rilyn said. "It's something you have to work for and I know they can do it."
Junior baseball pitcher Hayden Brock jokingly said the pressure is on after softball has started to catch up in the state title race.
"It gives us a lot of motivation," Brock said. They brag about it to us all the time saying how they won last year and won it this year. We want to go out there and show them that we can also win it."
#7 Calallen will be the highest-ranked team in Austin. The Wildcats will face #13 Longview Spring Hill Wednesday at 1 PM at UT-Austin's Disch-Falk Field. A win would send Calallen to the 4A State Championship Thursday night at 6 PM.
