CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Windsurfing can be found at the Padre Island National Seashore.
One expert said that people come from around the world to do it in the Coastal Bend.
"You can go wherever you want, as fast as you want, and you really do your things out there. That feeling of freedom is fantastic," said Olivier Jallais, Worldwinds Windsurfing owner.
Windsurfing since he was a kid, Jallais teaches the sport at Worldwinds Windsurfing at PINS. He is from France and said windsurfing is popular around the world.
Dennis Robinson started windsurfing two years ago and said it was challenging when he started. He explained that the area around Worldwinds Windsurfing in the Laguna Madre is a good place to learn.
"Anywhere that you can look, you can sail to," Robinson said. "Whether you want to go with friends or go alone, and like, kind of have a thing, and kind of clear your head or something, or if you want to try pull of some tricks or some fancy turns."
Ryan Liedeker said windsurfing is unlike anything he did before. He first tried it four years ago and said it is fun no matter how advanced you are.
"There's this flow you get into - the entire sport becomes your home and you just get out there and crush it," Liedeker said.
Jallais said you need to develop a sense of what the wind is like on the water. He added that windsurfing is a physically demanding sport.
He said beginners should not buy gear before they get a chance to try it. Instead, he recommends starting with some guidance and taking it from there.
"The body of water is fantastic to learn, so yes, the best would be to learn here, level up from here and from there, you'll know better yourself whether or not something you want to pursue and buy your own gear," Jallais said.
Robinson added that windsurfing gave him the perfect excuse to travel. He said he went on six trips since he started the sport--three outside of the United States, including as far as Turkey.
