HOUSTON — Former Gregory-Portland Wildcat Walker Janek officially joined the Astros organization Friday after agreeing to a contract.
Janek got his full bonus of $3.13 million for being the 28th overall pick. The former Wildcat made a huge name for himself at Sam Houston State, winning the Buster Posey Award for being the nation's top collegiate catcher.
Janek took batting practice with the Astros at Minute Maid Park and was introduced to the Houston press before the big league club gets set to face the Dodgers. The first round pick could become the first Coastal Bend native to suit up for Corpus Christi since Brooks Kieschnick back in the Hooks' inaugural season in 2005.
