CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — There is a new youth field at Whataburger Field.
OxyChem partnered with the Corpus Christi Hooks to make it happen. They said the field was put together in a little more than six weeks.
The Hooks said they are happy they found a partner to help fund the project.
The Miracle League of Corpus Christi, a nonprofit providing sports programs for kids and adults with special needs, said it will be a great place for their athletes to play.
"I have some wheelchair-bound athletes, as well, and this would be even better for them," Miracle League of Corpus Christi Executive Director Grace Gonzales said.
Hooks Director of Business Development Maggie Freeborn said her son was happy to see the changes.
"My son says, 'Mommy, it's so much nicer. We don't have to worry about dirt and mud and we have something nice and fun to play on," Freeborn said. "So, they, it means more, I think, to these kids then we could ever imagine."
Freeborn added that the Hooks hope to have little league games at the new youth field in the fall. OxyChem Plant Manager Todd Behne said this project was made with the Coastal Bend in mind.
"I love the sport of baseball, but for me personally, there's nothing more rewarding about giving back to the communities," Behne said.
