Islanders women headed to first ever NCAA Tournament

Texas A&M-CC defeated top-seeded Lamar to claim its first Southland Tournament title.

LAKE CHARLES, La. — The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team is going dancing for the first time in program history, defeating Lamar 68-61 for the Southland Conference championship. 

The Islanders lead by as much as 14 points in the 3rd quarter before the Cardinals rallied to close the gap to just three points at 52-49 with 5:39 to go. But Mireia Aguado beat the defense on an inbounds pass and laid it in with :17 to seal the win.

Senior Paige Allen was named the Southland Tournament MVP, finishing with a game-high 22 points.

Texas A&M-CC will hear its named called on Selection Sunday for the first time. Fans are welcome to watch the selection show with the team at 6:30 PM Sunday at the University Center's Lonestar Ballroom.

The women's March Madness tournament tips off next week with the First Four set for March 20-21 and the first round set for March 22-23. 3News will have highlights from Lake Charles and reaction from Islanders fans at the watch party tonight at 10 PM.
