Islanders women upset Texas A&M in season opener

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi continued its momentum from making the NCAA Tournament last season in the first ever win over the Aggies.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Going into College Station and picking up their first-ever win over the Texas A&M Aggies, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team extends its historic success from 2023-24 into the new season with the 62-56 victory Monday on opening night.

It marks the program's first win over the Aggies and first win over a Power opponent since Nov. 14, 2009 (at Alabama). It is the program's fifth ever win over a Power opponent.

The historic win kicks off the new year after the Islanders saw the 2023-24 end with history, as the program made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

Preseason All-Conference First-Team selections in graduates Paige Allen and Mireia Aguado both came away with 14 points for the double figure scoring performance in the season opener. Allen also grabbed 12 rebounds for the double-double, the eighth of her career.

WHAT A SEASON OPENER. The defending Southland champion Islanders Womens Basketball gets its first ever victory over Texas A&M, 62-56. Royce Chadwick told me they had "racehorses ready to come out and play" after replacing some major talent. #3SportsBlitz Sports Blitz - KIII 3 News KIII 3 News
