BATON ROUGE, La. — As of Monday morning, the Southeastern Conference has yet to announce any additional punishment or fines for Sunday's bench-clearing brawl in the closing minutes of the SEC Tournament title game between No. 8 LSU and No. 1 South Carolina in Greenville, S.C.
Six players were ejected and an LSU player's brother was arrested following the fight.
The Gamecocks would go on to defeat the Tigers, 79-72.
The altercation began when LSU's Flau'jae Johnson committed a foul on South Carolina freshman Milaysia Fulwiley. A chain reaction of pushing and shoving ensued to the point of Johnson's brother, Trayron Milton, jumping from his seat onto the court to enter the ruckus.
Players ejected from the game included South Carolina's Kamilla Cardoso, Chloe Kitts, Tessa Johnson, and Sakima Walker, and LSU's Aalyah Del Rosario and Janae Kent.
Milton was arrested and taken to jail by the Greenville Police Department.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey issued an initial statement following the fight.
"The championship of the SEC Tournament was a great game and a tremendous showcase for women’s basketball as a sport, but I am highly disappointed in the incident that took place late in the game and regret that it took focus off what was otherwise a successful championship event," Sankey said in the statement.
Additional punishment, including suspension, could affect both teams in the NCAA women's basketball tournament.
Selections for 2024 March Madness will be made on Sunday, March 17 with defending national champion LSU and previous winner South Carolina expected to be heavy favorites to reach the Final Four.
The opening round of the tournament begins the weekend of March 20-21.
