Dallas Cowboys' Mike McCarthy returning for 2024 season, team officials say

In four seasons with the Cowboys, McCarthy has gone 42-25 in the regular season and 1-3 in the playoffs.

ARLINGTON, Texas — After many speculated a big coaching change would soon be on the way, the Dallas Cowboys are reportedly planning to keep head coach Mike McCarthy for the 2024 NFL season, according to team officials.

This comes after the Cowboys had a disappointing 48-32 Wild Card playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at AT&T Stadium.

Jones hired McCarthy in 2020 after Jason Garrett and the Cowboys parted ways. Before joining Dallas, the 60-year-old Pittsburgh native was the Packers head coach from 2006-2018.

“I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach. There is great benefit to continuing the team’s progress under Mike’s leadership as our head coach. Specifically, there are many layers of success that have occurred this season as a result of Mike’s approach to leading the team, both with individual players and with our team collectively. Mike has the highest regular season winning percentage of any head coach in Cowboys history and we will dedicate ourselves, in partnership with him, to translating that into reaching our post season goals. Certainly, Mike’s career has demonstrated post season success at a high level, and we have great confidence that can continue," Jones said in a statement. "Further, our loss on Sunday is shared by everyone here, not just Coach McCarthy. Our players. Our coaches. Our front office. Myself. There is accountability for our results. I am accountable for our results. The lens we use to view and evaluate Coach McCarthy is holistic. While we’re all disappointed with the result on Sunday and with our playoff record, I am 100 percent supportive of him as our head coach and ability to reach our goals. We will start our process of review and decision making regarding everything that impacts our team and roster and, while we’re not going to address specific players and extensions or free agents at this point, it deserves our deepest review and consideration, and it will get it.”

In four seasons with the Cowboys, McCarthy has gone 42-25 in the regular season and 1-3 in the playoffs.

In Sunday's loss, Packers quarterback Jordan Love threw for three touchdowns, Aaron Jones ran for three more and Darnell Savage returned an interception 64 yards for a score as Green Bay handed Dallas the franchise's first home loss since the 2022 opener.

Romeo Doubs had a career-high 151 yards receiving a week after being hospitalized with a chest injury as the Packers won Love's postseason debut after finishing the regular season 6-2 to grab the NFC's final playoff spot.

Dak Prescott threw two interceptions before three mostly empty touchdown passes in another playoff flop for him and the Cowboys.

Dallas became the first team to win at least 12 games in three consecutive playoff seasons without making a conference title game.
