HOUSTON — An injury to Dolphins Grant DuBose during Sunday’s Dolphins-Texans game led to an extended stoppage of play.
DuBose was going across the middle trying to haul in a pass from Miami's Tua Tagovailoa in the third quarter when the Texans' Calen Bullock hit him with what appeared to be a helmet-to-helmet blow.
Play during the game was stopped for an extended period of time, as medical personnel attended to DuBose on the field. They cut DuBose’s jersey off of him and removed his facemask before restraining his extremities and carting him off the field.
DuBose appeared to clench both fists after the hit — movements consistent with what’s referred to as the “fencing response,” which can be common after a traumatic brain injury — before remaining motionless as medical personnel rushed to his side.
He was taken to Houston's Memorial Hermann Hospital for a head injury.
After the game, Dolphins' head coach Mike McDaniel gave an update.
“There’s been some positive feedback related to some head and neck imaging,” McDaniel said. “He will stay here overnight, and we’ll find out more by (Monday.)”
Bullock was flagged on the play – a 15-yard penalty.
“I was praying that he would be OK,” Bullock said. “I wasn’t trying to go out there and hurt nobody.”
DuBose is a second-year player out of Charlotte. As we learn more about DuBose's injury, we'll post it here.
