Nueces County receives 30 day extension from FEMA for Bob Hall Pier assessment

Crews will begin removing deck panels from the pier for the assessment starting tomorrow.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales announced an analysis of the damage won't be completed until the end of September. The area around the pier still remains closed to the public.

Canales gave the briefing during today's County Commissioners court in which she said the county requested a 30-day extension from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to get their assessment. That request was granted, so they now have until September 29 to submit the information.

"I think it's really important that people understand that the diagnostics has not been completed yet," Canales said. "We think we know what's wrong with the patient, being Bob Hall Pier, but we need to make sure that MRI confirms what we think. There is no final analysis and there will not be until the end of the month."

Yesterday, Canales told us that there is a possibility that the entire structure could be rebuilt. In order for the pier to be completely rebuilt, engineers have to rule the pier is more than 50-percent damaged.
