CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — While lots of people head to the Coastal Bend for sun and surf, many are visiting beaches around the city.
One expert is warning people to watch out for newly nested or nesting birds.
Early April marked the beginning of shorebird nesting season and birds have begun laying their eggs on University Beach.
University Beach right along Ocean Drive, across the way from TAMU-CC, on the Corpus Christi Bay.
The shorebird nesting season runs early August and scientists at the Island University's Conrad Blucher Institute are asking beachgoers to watch out while walking in the sand.
David Newstead, the Director of Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program, says you can easily scare nesting birds away from the area, leaving their hatchlings to die.
"I was actually there this morning, and there were some very small chicks that have hatched and we’re running around. We’re really in the middle of breeding season, so a lot of the birds will continue to be nesting out there for another month or two,” said David Newstead, the Director of Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program.
There are several other ways visitors can avoid disturbing the shorebirds like keeping dogs on a leash and never leave any fishing line or other gear at the beach.
Experts say you should not fly traditional kites or kites for Kitesurfing during the shoebird nesting season.
