Port of Corpus Christi to offer liquefied natural gas to incoming refueling ships

Officials with the Port of CC say it's a chance to modernize while reducing the port's and marine traffic carbon footprint.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — In a move that could mean a lot to a local company, the Port of Corpus Christi has announced they soon will be offering liquified natural gas refueling to incoming ships.

The LNG is being used more instead of diesel fuel to power tanker and cargo ships. While it's not yet known how much LNG fuel will be needed, Stabilis, an LNG provider in Three Rivers, has entered into an agreement with the port to truck LNG by tanker.

Jeff Pollack, the chief strategy officer at the port, said it's a chance to modernize while reducing the port's and marine traffic carbon footprint.

"Offering LNG as a fuel source for vessels is just one part of that strategy to decarbonize and to facilitate energy transition," Pollack said.

According to the agreement, the port will provide access to dock space for shore-to-ship fueling operations while Stabilis will deploy its existing fleet of mobile cryogenic assets including LNG transportation and distribution equipment.

Jeff Reddinger with Stabilis said it could result in big business and an increase in personnel for the company.
