CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — It was children's author Doctor Seuss in the book, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! who said, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”
What he didn't mention was that it may be a little harder when it comes to the area surrounding the new Harbor Bridge.
The work continues to move forward on the massive construction project, and the result will be a notable fixture in our city's skyline.
In the meantime, though, getting around takes both patience and practice.
According to Lynn Allison, Public Information Manager with the Harbor Bridge Replacement Project, traffic patterns that are in place one day may be changed the next.
“We’ve had a lot of traffic movements underway lately and some of them are permanent and some of them are temporary movements,” says Allison.
In the “permanent” category, will be the new exit just past the existing Harbor Bridge to the Crosstown Expressway. When you come off the bridge, you have to look quickly to see that what was once an exit on your left, is now on your right.
And it's a lot closer, too.
You’ll now have to navigate a loop and a narrow roadway before finally emerging in familiar territory. If you're not paying close attention, you could end up having to drive a few miles in order to get back.
Allison tells us, “As a native, I understand that it’s quite a maze – especially this whole interchange. It’s going to be a complex tie-in of three major roadways, so I certainly understand. It’s easy when we’re all set in our routes to miss that.”
Even though lots of people may miss it the first time through, it's a mistake most of us won't make again.
