Extreme heat affects parks across the Coastal Bend

The heat advisory is raising temperatures to the upper 90's but in certain areas like parks, it can feel like the temperature is in the 100's.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coastal Bend is beginning the summer with heat advisory after heat advisory. Temperatures are reaching the upper 90's but in certain areas like parks, it can feel like the temperature is in the 100's.

However, the heat didn't stop resident Elise Ross and her friends from playing disc golf at Lamar Park on Wednesday.

"The UV is obviously really intense, so make sure you have sunscreen on," Ross said.

Director of Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Robert Dodd said there are water stations and shades at some parks to keep everyone cool during the summer, but there are extra precautions everyone can take before heading out to the playground.

"I would avoid scheduling during the heat of the day, dress in light-weight loose-fitting clothing," Dodd said. "And check to make sure, check on your children and be aware of heat related illnesses."

Although some parks have a canopy across the playground area, not all parks have this feature. Dodd said this is something the City is working on.

"And you know that's always something that as we move forward in our budget process, shade is extremely important," he said. "And we understand that South Texas summers are always tough."

Several parents say they will continue to take their child to the park but will limit their playtime outside.

Ross said it's important to know your limit outside and to always stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and a hat.

"I think hydration is probably the most important," she said. "Generally, when you realize that you're dehydrated it's too late."

Cole Park's grand opening is set for June 12 and will include shading over the playground.
