Woman injured when roof collapses in north Houston

Martha Kilpatrick said she thought her roof was compromised during the derecho storm in May, so when rain fell Sunday, it fell on her head.

HOUSTON — As Beryl approaches Houston, the storm's outer rain bands have already damaged at least one home.

In Houston's Near Northside neighborhood, a woman was injured when rain caused the ceiling of her house to cave in and fall on her.

Martha Kilpatrick and her family were left to deal with the damage as Beryl closed in on the Gulf Coast. It left rafters exposed and sheetrock covering the floor.

Kilpatrick said she thinks severe storms in May weakened the roof and ceiling, which allowed it to happen.

"All that rain came down and that thing said 'boom' and fell right on my neck and it hit them (family) in the head and it hit my neck and my back," Kilpatrick said.

The Houston Fire Department responded to the scene and helped install a tarp but the Kilpatrick family said they were worried about staying in the home night.

"When more rain comes what do you think will happen?" family member Teanisha Fontenot said. "It only took a little bit for this to fall, so we're concerned right now."

Across the city, Houstonians are waiting to see what Beryl brings when it reaches the city, which is expected early Monday.
