Nueces County signs $20 million settlement for Hurricane Harvey damages

Insurance provider Lloyds of London has agreed to pay the $20 million amount within the next 21 days. This comes after an initial amount of $1.5 million for damages.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — County commissioners have signed off on a mediated settlement of $20 million in the dispute with Lloyds of London.

Following Hurricane Harvey, the insurance provider refused to give Nueces County any more than $1.5 million to cover damages from the storm.

Now, Lloyds of London has 21 days to pay out the settlement.

We spoke with Judge Barbara Canales and Commissioner Brent Chesney about the settlement.

"The court will have a good decision to make how can we invest these funds back into our community facilities that need absolute infrastructure upgrades " Said Judge Canales.

Chesney praises the county for their effort in pursuing the settlement, "When we started this we received 1.5 million from the insurance company. Then we said we want a bunch more than that and they gave us no more."

"We went to mediation and they offered 1 million bucks but to get $20 million we had to work our butts off for it."

According to Chesney, arbitration is a huge gamble. He told us the county could have come up empty-handed after it turned down the offer of another million dollars.
