CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As you work to get your holiday shopping done, the Corpus Christi Police Department wants you to be on the lookout for deals that might be too good to be true.
"Nobody is going to call and ask you for your personal information, as far as ‘What’s your Social Security? Bank account number? Your full name and date of birth,” said Lt. Emily Perez. “They won’t call you to begin with."
Perez said the department has noticed an increase in scams around Corpus Christi -- with all ages being targeted.
Some are online scams and others are phone scams, however, police said there are several red flags to watch out for.
If someone
- begins to push for your personal information;
- says that it is urgent that you pay immediately, or;
- tells you not to tell family or friends about the conversation
chances are the request is sketchy and you should hang up or disconnect.
