CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Students at Alice High School are preparing to enter the job market as the National Automobile Dealers Association reports that around 76,000 mechanic positions become available each year.
Over 40 students in the school's automotive program are one step closer to becoming mechanics after passing an exam from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
Alice High School's automotive instructor James Shipp, is utilizing his skills to teach the next generation of mechanics.
"We teach everything automotive basics to auto tech too. Basically bumper to bumper, anything from engines, electrical, wheels," he said.
41 out of 54 students enrolled in the school's automotive program passed their Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Certification exam—an industry-based certification that Shipp said would set his students up for future success.
"This gives them a leg up in the industry when they get out. It shows a potential employer that they're ready to learn and ready to work," he said.
Evan Godinez said it was rewarding to pass the exam alongside all his friends.
"It was really fun. It's nothing new, you know. We're always working together and stuff, trying to pass that test and make the best grade," he said.
Alice student Sean Bueno said that earning the certification means more to him.
"I come from a long line of mechanics from my dad's side and I just like cars a lot. It's was tough trying to pass it. It was harder than I expected, but I passed and I was super excited," he said.
Shipp emphasized that ultimately, preparing his students for the real world is what truly matters.
"I hope that they can take everything, take the knowledge that I give them and keep learning from there. These kids do have the drive to do it, to learn and to pass these exams and go forward in the field," he said.
All of the students interviewed by 3NEWS were juniors, indicating they still have time to consider their post-graduation plans.
They do say that they are all either considering or planning on becoming mechanics after graduation.
