CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The City of Corpus Christi Animal Care Services will have to wait another week to find out if they get full custody of hundreds of animals seized from a pet store at the Corpus Christi Trade Center. The animals were removed last Friday after ACS received reports that the animals were living in horrible conditions. About 300 parakeets, a number of rabbits, and lizards were all confiscated from the owner.
At a hearing in the Corpus Christi Municipal County Friday morning, a judge listened to evidence collected from the scene. The judge has to hear details of each individual animal that was confiscated. After about three hours Friday morning, court officials decided to carry the hearing over until next Friday at 8:30 a.m.
No charges have been filed in this case as of yet. Once the judge makes a decision on custody of the animal, ACS will either release the animals back to the owner or begin the process of getting them to rescue groups and adoptions. If the City of Corpus Christi is awarded the animals, ACS will then sit down with the District Attorney's Office to determine if any criminal charges will be filed.
