CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A 25-year-old Alice man is in custody after he tried to flee the scene of a crash and broke multiple road laws.

Around 1:50 p.m. a DPS Trooper noticed a 2018 Chevrolet Camaro speeding in the southbound lane of FM 2044, according to the agency's Public Information Sgt. Harold "Rob" Mallory.

The man, identified as David Lee Chapa, was driving the Camaro with passenger Misty Cervantes.

Mallory said Chapa ran the stop sign at the intersection of FM 2044 and State Highway 44 and did not yield to eastbound traffic, crashing into a 2021 Toyota RAV4, which had two adults and two small children in it.

Both cars were forced from the roadway in the crash.

Chapa tried to run away from the scene on foot, Mallory said, but was quickly taken into custody. He fainted while in custody and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Everyone else involved in the crash were also taken to a nearby hospital.

Drivers traveling eastbound on SH 44 towards Nueces County should expect delays as the crash investigation continues.
