CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A man could face federal charges after the Kleberg County Sheriff's Office conducted what they're calling a "unique" weapon bust near Kingsville on Tuesday.
Investigators say officers were alerted when a man started driving suspiciously on US 77 after seeing a police car.
They say the driver fled from police and ended up in Ricardo, parking at a home. The homeowner noticed the vehicle outside and alerted police, the suspect then took off again.
Once they were able to pull the driver over, police made the discovery of two AR-15 style rifles with the serial numbers removed.
They also found ammunition described by Sheriff Richard Kirkpatrick as "50 caliber 600-grain armor-piercing incendiary rounds."
While this is not illegal to carry, Kirkpatrick told 3NEWS the driver's suspicious behavior and fleeing police led them to believe it was headed to the cartel in Mexico.
"In the course of this investigation we believe this individual was taking these guns, ammo to Mexico to supply the cartel, there's no other reason to have this kind of stuff," he said.
The ATF and the Kleberg County Sheriff's office are continuing this investigation.
