Beach re-nourishment project begins on Padre Island

Packery Channel will be dredged to replace sand from Michael J. Ellis Beach to Whitecap Beach.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Dredging work has begun at Padre Island’s Packery Channel, part of a beach nourishment project to give the public more space to enjoy the shore -- whether that's driving, sitting, tanning, or just enjoying the view.

City of Corpus Christi engineers said the project began at the community parking lot in front of the sea wall at Michael J. Ellis Beach and will go all the way to Whitecap Beach.

This includes new sand, which will to expand approximately 100 ft. into the water.

So, where you were standing last Spring Break, expect to be 100 more feet out the same time next year -- but on fresh sand.

That's when the city expects the fresh stretch of beach to be ready.
