CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — There will be a new sheriff in Bee County next year.
Current Sheriff Alden Southmayd III was resoundingly defeated in the Republican primary runoff against challenger Randy Aguirre on Tuesday.
According to the unofficial results posted Tuesday night, Aguirre won 62 percent of the vote with 85 percent of the precincts reporting.
No Democrat filed to run for sheriff in the March primary.
Southmayd served as Bee County's sheriff for the last eight years, according to his campaign website. He had previosuly been with the sheriff's office for 19 years and the Beeville Police Department for 12 years before that.
Aguirre's experience comes primarily with the Texas Department of Public Safety, first as a Trooper and later as a Texas Ranger.
He also previously worked as a corrections officer at the prison complex in Beeville.
