CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Padre Island National Seashore put out a call for volunteers for the 2024 Billy Sandifer Big Shell Beach Cleanup set to take place next Saturday, Feb. 24.
Event organizers with Friends of Padre said they are in need of volunteers with 4x4’s and utility trailers to transport volunteers to and from the work area.
The beach cleanup takes place once a year in the Big Shell portion of the Padre Island National Seashore, which spans nearly 40 miles of the national park. Now in its 29th year, the annual event brings hundreds of volunteers together to dedicate one Saturday to removing trash from the 'rugged, desolate stretch of beach.'
Volunteers should arrive at the Malaquite Visitors Center at the Padre Island National Seashore no later than 8 a.m. Those with experience in beach driving will be the first to leave the staging area in the parking lot as early as 7 a.m.
Park entrance fees will be waived, and a free lunch and other goodies will be provided at the end of the cleanup!
