City of Corpus Christi, Nueces County hold briefings to inform about hurricane preparations

Residents are advised to keep an eye on the City's and County's social media pages for communication about the storm.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Officials with the City of Corpus Christi and Nueces County held two separate briefings to give Coastal Bend residents much needed information regarding Hurricane Beryl and local preparations.

Nueces County Judge Connie Scott said preparing for the storm has been a team effort.

"We are on constant conference calls with the National Weather Service, we are on constant calls with our EOC's," Scott said. "Our department's are all working together throughout the county."

Scott said that residents who are in RV's or campers should take special precaution if they plan to leave town.

"It takes a while to pack those up, they take up a lot of space on the highways," she said. "We prefer that you get those out and get moving down the roads."

Corpus Christi Fire Department Fire Chief Brandon Wade said the City's Emergency Operations Center will be a key part of their response plan.

"They are the key piece that has planning updates, getting resources, requesting resources even from the state," Wade said. "All departments participate here in the city as part of the E.O.C. in some fashion."

The fire chief said that another issue residents need to keep in mind is the threat of coastal flooding. He said that due to our geographical location it's something residents cannot overlook.

"Tropical Storm Alberto brought tidal surge of roughly two to three foot, some areas almost four foot," Wade said. "If you were flooded in Tropical Storm Alberto, you can anticipate to see the same if not greater type of coastal flooding as before."

Wade said that while there is no concern of evacuations as of Friday night, he wants residents to keep an eye out for any communication from the City as it relates to the storm.
