'Cautionary Tale': Coastal Bend woman talks detecting skin cancer early

Hilary Soderborg is bringing a new meaning to the term 'healthy glow.' The skin cancer survivor is finding a new way to help others remember to protect themselves.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Hilary Soderborg is bringing a new meaning to the term 'healthy glow.' The skin cancer survivor said she did not always practice healthy habits in the sun before her diagnosis, but luckily, her early detection was key when it came to her treatment. Now, she is encouraging others to take note of her cautionary tale through her 'sunless alternative sun tans.'

Soderberg found two abnormal moles on her leg before showing them to her dermatologist. A pathology report revealed that they were extremely abnormal. The business owner, who has a background in nursing, said that it was early detection that made all the difference.

"Skin cancer is a big deal, it's very common, and living in a coastal town, we're always around it," she said.

Today, Hilary wants people- especially those who live in coastal towns-to remember these tips, and remember that there is no 'safe sunning':

  • Visit your dermatologist annually
  • Learn how to self-check after spending time out in the sun
  • Wear SPF daily- no matter the weather and reapply often
  • Cover up, avoid tanning beds
  • Look into alternatives—nurse background and tanning enthusiast
